North Canyon Spur in South Yuba River State Park - November 21, 2015
We will see the water of the South Yuba River rushing over big rocks as we drive over the metal bridge at Edwards Crossing. The trailhead is 1.5 miles up the hill (dirt road) from there. The hike is 6 miles of easy to moderate trails with some steep, pine-covered canyons below and glimpses of the river.
Footnote: Yesterday's hike showed again what a wonderful, smart, resourceful group our WOW ladies are! Our guests, falling into their professional roles in the medical field, knew exactly what to do and how to communicate to the 10 emergency ground crew who came to care for Carole. She had tripped and fallen down the steep side of the trail, breaking her leg. Her leg was immobilized in a splint of ace bandages around a pair of hiking sticks. The ladies formed a chain of jackets tied together to hoist Carole back up to the trail. Ground response teams from North San Juan and Columbia Fire Dept. arrived with a wheelbarrow-type gurney and used that to move her to an open location. There, the helicopter let down a line and hoisted her up in a sling, transporting her to the hospital. She is now recovering nicely. . . a hearty soul!
