Independence Trail - May 19, 2012
We will be hiking on the West Trail in South Yuba River State Park. This was the very first wilderness trail in the country with wheelchair accessibility. Highlighting the West Trail is a waterfall one mile from the entrance accessed by switchback flumes to the swirling waters of Rush Creek. Also featured on the west side is an overlook of the Yuba River, surrounded by canyon flora. At the end of the (proximately) 5 mile trek is a .4 mile steep climb (Jones Bar Trail) from the river back to the trailhead. We will see many lovely spring flowers including: bleeding hearts, California Indian Pink, wild irises, fairy lanterns, larkspur, twining snake lilies, yarrow, alumroot.
We will picnic at the Rush Creek pond cooling off among the shady trees.
