Malakoff Diggins - April 21, 2012
We will be hiking the trails at Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park near Nevada City. The stark landscape was created between the 1850s and 1880s by hydraulic gold mining. This site is considered California's largest 'hydraulic' mine. We will see huge cliffs carved by mighty streams of water that washed away entire mountains to find the precious metal. The park now contains hiking trails, a museum, and the deserted mining town of North Bloomfield along with picnic and camping facilities. Lunch will follow in Nevada City at the Broad St. Bistro.
